The donkey — magarac — has been part of life on these islands for as long as anyone can remember. Before roads existed, before engines, before any of the modern world reached this coastline, it was the donkey that made daily life possible. It carried stone to build the walls you still see standing today, wine down from the hillsides, olive oil from the groves, families across terrain too steep and rocky for anything else. Quietly, without complaint, generation after generation. That kind of steady, humble strength became something Croatians recognised as their own — and the magarac became a national symbol.
